Black soldier fly larvae have enormous appetites and rapidly convert food waste into castings. This means they break down the tough fibres of plant material while releasing the bound nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium locked within. While they consume a large portion of these nutrients as they grow, they also excrete an equal amount into the frass they produce.

‘Frass’ is a term used to describe the casting (poop) and exoskeletons left behind after insect larvae are removed from a compost pile. Frass is loaded with far more nutrients than ordinary soil and is typically used to stimulate plant growth. It can be used on the farm, in the home garden, or even for houseplants.

Unlike most traditional growth enhancers, BSFL frass contains chitin – a protein found in the exoskeletons of insects. Because plants and insects have evolved together for millions of years, plants can detect the presence of chitin in soil. This informs them that insects are present, causing the plants to drastically increase their defences against potential predators. The result is plants with stronger cell walls, reinforced structure, and healthier, larger leaves. So, the presence of chitin causes plants to develop defences against insects, which greatly increases the health and vitality of your plants.
